Queer Games Bundle 2022 - our Top 5

Pride Month 2022 is almost over and so is the sale period for Queer Games Bundle 2022 on itch.io. After a successful premiere in 2021, the Queer Games Bundle once again presents lots and lots of games by queer game makers, aiming to support queer creators and celebrate the diversity of their games. We had a look into the bundle and share a few of our favorites from it here!

This year the Queer Games Bundle includes an impressive 588 games of vastly different styles and genres, all made by LGBTQ+ developers. But this quite overwhelming number of games left us with one big question: What to play (first)? We got ourselves the bundle, looked around what others recommended and have been playing a lot ourselves. But of course, we didn't want to keep it all to ourselves and give you some ideas which games to check out if you decide to get the bundle, so here are our top 5 (+1):

What's your gender?
What's your gender? by PulpleSloth is a very peaceful game. In it, we wander through a white labyrinth with several levels in which we repeatedly come across terms related to LGBTQ+ identities. These terms are given a short explanation. One particularly nice feature is a room with doors labeled with various pronouns - both traditional and neopronouns. As you walk through a door, that action is described using the respective pronoun. We particularly liked this game for its educational value and relaxed mood.

A Mortician's Tale
In A Mortician's Tale by Laundry Bear Games, we play a mortician fresh out of college. She tries to treat the deceased in her care and their relatives with the utmost respect - something that becomes much more difficult as the story progresses. Along the way, we learn about various funeral practices in the U.S., both through the game itself and through an in-game newsletter. We particularly liked the peaceful, quiet atmosphere and the educational aspect.

Good Morning Hon
Good Morning Hon by Jess Andz is a very short game that shows a day in the life of the protagonist and her fiancée. The game has a clever and emotional twist that ensures it stays in the memory despite being so short. We won't reveal more here, but can only recommend playing it.

Just Cosplay
Just cosplay by Deadnettle Games tells the story of a person who originally merely wants to put together a cosplay for a male character from a webcomic. While shopping for the first time in the men's department and ordering a binder, conflicting feelings arise. We particularly liked the creative way the main character's conflicting thoughts and feelings about gender are portrayed through text.

We should talk
In We should talk we play a young woman who spends her evening in a bar. We can have conversations at the bar, as well as communicate with her girlfriend via text messages. The special feature is that we can compose our answers, both those in the bar and those on the cell phone, from text snippets and determine the direction of the conversations this way.

Honorable Mention: Gender Dysphoria
We don't feel entirely comfortable recommending the game Gender Dysphoria, as it can be very triggering. However, we found it so impactful that we didn't want to leave it unmentioned either. This game by exodrifter is about the pain of being constantly misgendered, as well as other negative experiences related to coming out as a trans woman. Please take note of the developer's warnings on the game's page and at the beginning of the game, and only play it if you are in the right headspace for it.
