Hamburg's games industry launches digital internship for students

Hamburg games companies and partners start a digital internship program for students from Hamburg schools. Game Experts and media educators provide insights into the creation of games with practical tasks. School students can apply to participate until May 7!

On the initiative of game Hamburg, three Hamburg games companies are starting a digital internship program for students from Hamburg schools. Experts from game development and media educators will provide insights into the creation process of computer games with practical tasks in the areas of game design, programming, audio, community management and creation of graphics during an online internship week from May 31 to June 4. Until 07 May school students from Hamburg can apply to participate.

Even during the pandemic, the Hamburg Games industry offers safe jobs, registers growth and always looks for qualified staff. But how does a young person set foot in the games industry? What skills are required of young professionals? And what jobs are there around games? The digital games internship for school students will provide answers to these questions.

Hamburg-based game companies InnoGames, Tivola Games and Deep Silver FISHLABS, the industry association game Hamburg, HAW - Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and Gamecity Hamburg are partnering up for the internship week. The program is organized and carried out by the initiative Creative Gaming.

Insights into career paths and hands-on experience over five days

On five days from May 31 to June 4, students will get an insight into different professional fields:

  • Game Design,
  • Character Design,
  • Community Management,
  • Audio Design

On each day, experts from Hamburg-based games companies will give practical insights into their day-to-day work, talk about their careers and answer the school students' questions. In addition, the students will try it out themselves: they will program mini-games, deal with game mechanics, develop characters together and gain an understanding of sound and music production. They will be accompanied by media educators from the Creative Gaming initiative. On the first day, the participants are personally welcomed by the heads of the companies involved in the internship. The last day ends with a presentation of the games and content created during the internship.

Applications for participation: until May 07!

Hamburg school students of all school types are called upon to apply for participation in the games internship from now until May 7. All you need to do is send an email to andreas.hedrich@creative-gaming.eu with the subject "Games Internship Hamburg", answering the question: "Which game title would you like to have been involved in developing and which task would you have taken on?" The application may also be submitted as a video with a maximum length of 45 seconds and should always include name, age, school and class.

Further information events planned at schools

In addition to the joint games internship, further offers are being created in Hamburg to spark school students’ interest in the games industry as a professional perspective. Gamecity Hamburg is launching the new program "Gamecity@School": In information events lasting two school hours, students will meet experts from the games industry who will share insights and experiences from their everyday working lives. The first "Gamecity@School" event will be held on June 3 at the Stadtteilschule am Hafen district school; dates at other schools are already being planned.
