Bytro Labs celebrates 10th anniversary!

From Freiburg to Hamburg - Bytro Labs celebrates 10 years!

In 2009, three students founded Bytro Labs to develop an innovative real-time strategy browser game. "Supremacy 1914" is a huge award-winning success with a lasting impact. Ten years later Bytro has more than 10 million registered players who can play strategically sophisticated battles in 15 different languages. Bytro Labs decided for HTML5 so that all titles are available online and on mobile.

Tobias Kringe, Managing Director Operations at Bytro Labs, talks about the companys success:

  1. What have been the main reasons for Bytro Labs to move from Baden-Württemberg to Hamburg in 2011?

Tobias Kringe: “We came to Hamburg mainly for its strong gaming scene. We had great support and partners in Freiburg, but we also had to explain quite often what browsergames are and how we could possibly expect making any money with them. The best impulses for our early business decisions were fueled by exchanges with those already successful in the industry. Hamburg was, and still is, the best place to be in Germany when it comes to free-to-play online games. The open culture and knowledge exchange between companies is great, and the city is very attractive for new employees from Germany and abroad. I really like how Gamecity has been helping to strengthen this culture in Hamburg.”

  1. What is special about Bytro Labs browser and mobile games?

Tobias Kringe: “Bytro's games are unique for both our games and the technology we use to develop them.

The game mechanics of our strategy games are unique - we basically define our own genre:  massive, real-time board games which are played over several weeks. They offer depth and cater to a very specific player audience, which enjoys complex and cognitive game play. Being passionate gamers ourselves, we make online strategy games that we and our players love.

Our technology stack is unique as we use the latest possibilities HTML5 and WebGL to distribute the game on many platforms, mobile and desktop, simultaneously. Our biggest market is mobile, but our games are also perfect fits for bigger desktop screens and can be played in web browsers and Steam. Players can use their account to play their games on all of those platforms.”

  1. How many new staff are you looking for at the moment and in which fields of work?

Tobias Kringe: “We are always looking for talented and passionate people to join our team of almost 40 Bytronians. Currently we'd like several developers and a data/game analyst to join our product and engine teams. Developers on any level are welcome - from passionate junior to experienced backend lead or HTML5 online game engine specialist.”
